Two new departments

Upfront is a quick look at the latest developments from Stanford Medicine.

The School of Medicine
has created two new departments: the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Data Science.

Physicians in the emergency medicine department, formerly a division of the Department of Surgery, evaluate and treat more than 40 percent of Stanford inpatients.

The Department of Biomedical Data Science unites biostatistics and bioinformatics in one discipline to tackle large-scale computational challenges.

The new departments, approved in July, are the first created in the school since 2003.
